The Charmed List

"The best friends to enemies to lovers story I needed in my life! The Charmed List utterly enchants with its delightful characters and heartfelt themes of family, friendship, and first love. I adored this fun-filled and swoony road trip romance with a magical twist!" – Axie Oh, author of XOXO and The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea

Sometimes you need a little magic to fall in love.

Ellie Kobata has spent most of high school on the sidelines, keeping her art Instagram private and shying away from the world. She can’t even tell her only friend, Lia, who she really is: Ellie is part of a secret magical community, and no one outside of it can know it exists. The only person Ellie could fully relate to was Jack Yasuda – her childhood friend who mysteriously started to snub her a few years ago.

But before senior year, Ellie is ready to take some risks and have a life-changing summer, starting with her Anti-Wallflower List – thirteen items she’s going to check off one by one. With this list, she hopes to finally come out of her shell; even though she can’t share her full self with the world. But when number four on Ellie’s list goes horribly wrong—revenge on Jack Yasuda—she’s certain her summer is cursed. Instead of spending her summer with Lia, Ellie finds herself stuck in a car with Jack driving to a magical convention. But as Ellie and Jack travel down the coast of California, number thirteen on her list—fall in love—may be happening without her realizing it.

In The Charmed List, Julie Abe sweeps readers away to a secret magical world, complete with cupcakes and tea with added sparks of joy, and an enchanted cottage where you can dance under the stars.

  • Advance Praise for The Charmed List

"If you could press the feeling of summer nights, birthday candle wishes, and first love in the pages of a book, you would get The Charmed List. Not only is this a sweet romance that sparks with magic, it is also a heartfelt story about taking chances and becoming your own definition of brave." - Sarah Suk, author of Made in Korea

  • "A delightfully sweet escape. This magical enemies-to-lovers romance made me grin and tugged at my heart―I’m thoroughly charmed!" ―Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of Today Tonight Tomorrow

My Review:

📖Book: The Charmed List
⭐️Rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✍🏼Author: Julie Abe
📚Genre: Teens & YA
🗏 Pages: 304 – Medium-pace (short chapters)
💌Tropes: Childhood Friends to enemies to lovers, slow burn, forced proximity, one bed, bucket list, banter
⚠️TW: Cancer, Death of parent, Racism

Spell-binding, spine-tingling, whimsical, witty, The Charmed List is the YA romcom this summer needs. Ellie and Jack used to be best friends and now are enemies as their families run rival magic shops. After years of being a wallflower, Ellie decided to make a bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish to overcome her shyness; She and her best friend Lia will go on a road trip to complete the list. However, after a failed magic prank trying to get revenge on Jack goes wrong, Ellie is forced to complete the list and go on the road trip with JACK INSTEAD. This was adorable with the banter between the two main characters. I loved how Ellie and Jack walked down memory lane, and we got to learn and understand them. Nevertheless, the best part of this is how the magic is in everything. I adore witchy vibe books, and this is a perfect addition to my collection. This needs to be on your shelf.

Thank you so much to Wednesday Books & St. Martins Press for an ARC of the Charmed List in exchange for my honest review.

WHAT OTHERS SAY?

KIND WORDS FROM OTHERS

"Holiday’s follow-up to A Princess for Christmas hits all the right notes as the heir to a dukedom discovers love during the holidays...Holiday cleverly draws parallels to Love, Actually throughout this witty, emotionally charged holiday tale. Readers will delight in the strong heroine seeking love on her own terms." -Publishers Weekly

"RITA-nominated Holiday follows A Princess for Christmas with another splendidly entertaining romance that offers just the right dash of holiday cheer and delectably droll wit." -Booklist

"Holiday’s knack for writing witty banter is on full display here, with Dani and Max's escalating text messages and phone conversations showing a deepening friendship between them... This slow-burn romance will appeal to readers who enjoy the friends-to-lovers trope. The novel carefully builds trust and a deepening emotional attachment between Dani and Max..." -Kirkus Reviews
