Love is the trickiest spell of all.

Lucinda Caraway loves living in Freya Grove, the mystic seaside town where charms, hexes, and magical beings of all kinds are the norm. She spends her days teaching high school history and her nights reading tea leaves and tending to her conjure garden. It’s a good life . . . but she can’t stop wishing for more.

Until one night, that wish turns into a spell, and suddenly Lucy can’t say no. Not to a public karaoke performance. Not to running a 10K. And, most alarmingly, not to her high school crush, Alexander Dwyer, who needs her help unjinxing his new house—which just happens to be right across the street from hers.

Alex has spent the last ten years traveling the world on adventures Lucy has only ever dreamed of, and he’s planning to leave again as soon as his house is safe to sell. But until Lucy can unhex herself, she and Alex are stuck together. And with so much magic in the air, maybe the next spell Lucy casts will be the one that convinces him to stay.

Magic without all the spooky thrills, Wishful Thinking is so charming it will leave you begging for more. Lucy is a history teacher r who is stuck in a rut and also happens to be a magical witch. Living her life teaching and doing tea leaf readings, she wants more... and by accident hex's herself,. Alex, her former High School crush is back in town because his parents had a surprise for his birthday; they bought him a house to settle down. Alex doesn't want this and just needs help renovating and getting all the hex out so he may sell it. This charming romance will have you spell bounded and turning the pages until the very end.

I loved how Lucy broke out of her shell and started to figure out who she was because of the hexes. I loved how this storyline played out. You will miss 100% of the shots you don''t take, and I think Celestine wrote the perfect take of this. My favorite thing about this novel is the dual point of view. I adore seeing inside both of the main characters' heads and how they have pined for each other for over ten years. I would have felt something was missing if this were only from Lucy's viewpoint. Alex is a fantastic book boyfriend, and I hope we get to see these two characters and Freya Grove again in the future.

Celestine Martin's debut novel is one of my favorites of 2022. I had the pleasure of chatting with Celestines about the book and the process it took for her to become an author, and it's one of my favorite interviews this year. Celestines is down to earth and spent a decent amount of the time we spent talking, uplifting, and bringing in other authors into the conversation. From speaking about the authors who made her fall in love with romance to the books that helped her research for Witchful thinking to chatting about highlighting other books and authors when reviewing as shelf sisters. It felt like I was speaking with a friend I had known for years.
